Hut Study Revisited

My goal for the revisited hut study was to explore and investigate spatial relationships

Relationships of the following were explored:
-hut to site
-hiker (and gear) to hut
-height (tree, hut, hiker)
-scale and proportion of hut (furniture and layout)
-movement within the hut
-the desired views

  1. Denise and Mike looked at your Hut posting and your 1-3-9. I think you are going in the right direction and am encouraged by what you have done. What both the 1-3-9 and the Hut need is a more focused investigation into something very specific. We view the sketch problems as ways to test ideas to make the thesis statements more specific and richer. Right now your analysis and site design of the Hut make a lot of sense – but doesn’t talk about the poetry or the ways architecture could give back.

What we would like you to do is to use what you have done with the Hut and use it as a base. Now focus on just one element like how the Hut meets the ground. Keep the same plan. Think about the slope of the hill. What is it like to walk around the Hut? What are the foundations like? How does the foundation system reflect you idea about giving back? How does the wall meet the foundation? As the slope moves around the building is there a retaining wall? How does water move down the hill? What about erosion? Is there poetry in the meeting of building to ground?
